What to expect: A placid, well-maintained resort situated away from the resort-area bustle, Sugar Beach lives up to its sweet name. The resort's developer, struck by the soft, light-colored sand along the ocean, bestowed the name. (Hardly anyone uses the beach's Hawaiian name anymore.) Families and budget-minded travelers come here to rest, relax, swim, barbecue at sunset, and walk the beach. Amenity highlights: The ocean and the 3-mile, undeveloped beach bestow a relaxing sense of space here. Views of the ocean, sunsets, and the West Maui Mountains looming to the north refresh guests' spirits. The activities?paddling in the pool, soaking in the spa, grilling steaks?are so low key it's as if the resort had hung out a do-not-disturb sign for guests' benefit. Insider tip: Cook-at-home guests can travel three-quarters of a mile south three times a week to where the Farmers Market of Maui sells locally grown produce, local cheeses, freshly baked banana bread, and other treats at a shaded roadside stand.
