What to expect: Attracted by its moderate prices and reputation for ecological sensitivity, young families, couples, and groups arrive from all over the world to enjoy this pretty resort. A United Nations of languages can be heard around the pools, on the beach, and in the restaurants and bars.

Amenity highlights: Two huge pools, which are separate and different, give guests the option of swimming/sunning activities nearest the beach, or quiet relaxation. The "quiet pool" includes a children's section and a swim-up bar. A deep beach runs north and south for great distances, providing beach walking and people watching.

Between the resort's two rows of villas is a tropical forest containing beautiful old trees that shade most of the resort's center. Within the forest are two cenotes, or natural wells rising from the underground freshwater rivers coursing through the Yucatan Peninsula's limestone layers and flowing toward the sea. The Reef Club has been acclaimed for preserving this forest, including building a wood platform in the middle so guests can walk through the forest above the depressions occupied by the cenotes. Cool and dark during the day, the platform glows magically at night when illuminated ropes around tree trunks are turned on.

Insider tip: Scattered here and there beside paths through the grounds are sets of concrete chairs joined at one arm so they face one another. These sets are called tu y yo chairs (you and me) and are designed for romance. Aerobics classes
