What to expect: Tranquility suffuses the artfully enhanced resort, which is open to light and air at every turn, including glass elevators. Off the lobby, birdsong graces two open-sky atriums. In the main atrium, a sparkling sheet of water slides down a multi-story Plexiglas waterfall in a mesmerizing display. Even the Hawaiian trio entertaining evenings on the main atrium's terrace lounge is exceptionally lyrical and evocative of the islands' culture. Amenity highlights: Abundant sunning/swimming/soaking options abound at the beach and beachside pool complex. A spacious sundeck surrounds a large, free-form pool and includes a small spa for children and a large one for adults. Protected by a reef, the flat-water cove entices even timid swimmers and novice snorkelers to float and view exotic fish. The beach is broad, deep, and flat and the color of ground, gray pearls. Padded lounge chairs are plentiful around the pool and on the palm-tree shaded beach. Chilled-towel breaks offer relief for sunbathers. Insider tip: The resort raises young endangered Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles in a saltwater pond and releases them each summer during a July 4 "Turtle Independence Day" ceremony. Other ponds separately hold manta rays and colorful reef fish, and behind the Canoe House Restaurant is a pond that contains about eight restless sharks. Mealtimes for all these are an active event, and can be observed in the company of the resort's marine biologist.
