What to expect: Families, honeymooners, and retired couples come to the Maui Sunset for the deep-green grounds spreading out to the deep-blue sea a short stroll away, and for South Maui's famously dry climate. Amenity highlights: At the Maui Sunset, guests cannot avoid rest and relaxation?from sunning on the lawn, to swimming in the pool, to barbecuing steaks at sunset, to friendly competitions on the putting green, shuffleboard courts, and croquet lawns. Insider tip: Three miles south of Maui is a long, uncrowded stretch of sand called Keawakapu Beach that begins in front of the Mana Kai Resort. Next to the Mana Kai is a public parking lot. Signs point the way to the beach, which offers great snorkeling along its rocky northern terminus, terrific boogie boarding when the tradewinds blow, and long, tropical-fantasy walks. (Buildings along the beach seldom exceed palm-tree height, somewhat preserving the illusion the beachfront is undeveloped.)
