About Longship Travel & The Origin of Our Name -
The Viking Longship
The
Viking Longship - long, narrow and certain to carry
a lethal payload. The Vikings were one of the dominant
european sea powers from 800 A.D. and on for many centuries,
until around 1100 A.D. and the Lonsghip is one of the
myths from the Viking era.
The Longships took the Vikings wherever they needed
to be and made it possible for them to unite Denmark,
Norway, southern Sweden and England in a Viking empire
by the year 1025.
These ships were commonly referred to as "Dragons"
for their immensity and for usually bearing a dragon's
name and head at the prow. Some of them were as long
as 32 meters and had from 20 to 30 rowing benches. Longships
with more than 30 benches are believed to have existed.
The Longship's superior design, material and craft
is the result of over 6000 years of of evolution.
